YOU ANIMAL Reconsidering Wildlife
2023
A Gallery/Allen+Allan Fine Art, Salt Lake City, Utah
ARTIST STATEMENT - In YOU ANIMAL I consider souls in a variety of physical forms. Some individuals are housed in large bodies covered in fur, some inhabit small forms enfolded in feathers while others have figures of flesh.
RECONSIDERING WILDLIFE - In his solo painting exhibition YOU ANIMAL, artist Brent Godfrey democratically presents human and nonhuman figures, inviting us to reconsider the definition of wildlife. At times his beings are expressed mythically, conjuring tales of gods in animal form, full of spirit and intent. Some works are best described as portraits while others combine disparate figures to form stories or describe relationships. Godfrey’s signature mark making is consistent throughout the work while, as usual, he flows freely between styles to accomplish what he desires in each piece. Some paintings lean monochromatic, while others burst with color. Some embrace elements of figurative tradition, while others break into abstraction. Godfrey’s images combine to create a celebration of life in a multitude of forms and remind us there are souls housed beneath this menagerie of surfaces.

OBSERVATION An Exhibition About Looking & Seeing
2017
A Gallery/Allen+Allan Fine Art, Salt Lake City, Utah
ARTIST NOTES - In OBSERVATION (Looking & Seeing), I am contemplating the importance of engaging in thoughtful visual discovery. With so many images being thrown at us today, it is easy to get in the habit of lazy looking; over indulging in quickly passing optical stimuli that brings brief entertainment then emptiness. Thoughtfully experiencing artworks created with soulful intent allows us to be challenged rather than simply placated, fed a nutritious visual meal rather than simply snacking on ocular junk food.

William Havu Gallery, Denver, Colorado
DESCRIPTION A selection of representational paintings from the archives.
NATURE NURTURE
2015
LewAllen Contemporary, Santa Fe, New Mexico
EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION In his first solo exhibition at LewAllen Galleries, realist painter Brent Godfrey has created a riveting show entitled Nature|Nurture, consisting of more than 25 virtuosic paintings in oil or acrylic that cap a brilliant career spanning more than 25 years. Using an uncanny ability to infuse gorgeous imagery with mystery and allusive power, Godfrey creates paintings of family and nature whose apparent serenity often disguises a razor sharp capacity to incite memory and provoke re-examination of conventional assumptions. The meaning in these works extends far beyond literalness of subject matter to become subtle metaphor in service of personal authenticity and a better world.

PERSONAE
2014
A Gallery/Allen+Allan Fine Art, Salt Lake City, Utah
EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION In “Personae” Godfrey reflects upon who we are as individuals and communities. His figures move through mysterious spaces; they blur into abstraction, are confronted with unexpected marks then emerge, dream-like, carrying stories. This diverse body of work celebrates life’s journey with nuance and an engaging beauty.
ARTIST STATEMENT This work relates to photorealism in that it exposes (even exaggerates) its photographic references. The paintings depart from photorealism through their celebration of paint. While paintings attempting to look like photos generally embrace thin paint and, like pop art, erase the artist mark, these works are thickly painted, blurred, scraped and painted again, making paint itself a clear subject. The abstract marks are not simply embellishment. They layer emotional, intellectual and psychological aspects of the subject and contribute to the overall composition. By the end of the painting process I am primarily thinking abstractly, focusing on what makes the work visually strong, independent of the subject.
My paintings are not stories; they are thoughts. Stories have beginnings, middles and endings. My work resides in a suspension of space and time. I paint memories that lie just out of reach; moments that are familiar but ephemeral. I explore emotions that don’t translate well into words. I paint desires, struggles and consequences related to experience, not just illustrations of the experiences themselves. More than recording the journey, I want to capture the drives, impressions and responses to moments that join to create the essence of life.
Connections: Painting Life
2011
A Gallery/Allen+Allan Fine Art, Salt Lake City, Utah
ARTIST STATEMENT These paintings are segments of my story. Through them I ponder experiences, events and societal observations. Referencing family photos, tabloid clippings and historical illustrations, I combine varying degrees of abstraction and representation to inform and challenge the viewer. Some of my marks define objects while others layer emotional and cognitive content.
It took thirty years of painting experience to be able create this work. Some of the ideas have floated for decades waiting for stylistic inspiration and a full quiver of abilities. While the pictures may suggest beginnings or conclusions, they are all part of a continuum, glimpses of moments along the way. Together, they form a temporary whole: chapters in an evolving narrative.
